Coach Griffin - Varsity Coach

Craig Griffin enters his eighteen year of coaching at Royal High School.  In his seventeen years, Coach Griffin has made the Highlander program into a perennial playoff team, including back to back CIF Finals and State tournament appearances.   The 2018-19 squad had a rough year, finishing 9 19 and finishing 5th in the Coastal Canyon.   Learning from last seasons tough losses, revamping the the offense and defense, this group of Highlanders will look to make huge strides in and out of League.   Boosting a team with experience playing at the Varsity level, this years squad looks to contend for the League and CIF Championship.

Coach Griffin was an All-Marmonte League and Ventura County player during his high school playing days at Simi Valley High School under Dean Bradshaw.  After helping lead his team to the C.I.F. Finals and 1st round of state play-offs, Griffin continued to play in college.  While at Los Angeles Valley College, Griffin earned All-Conference honors as well as team MVP.  While at LAVC, he earned a basketball scholarship to Fresno Pacific University, where he earned the schools first Academic All-America award.

Griffin and his staff have been working hard at building a winning program that emphasizes trust, loyalty and respect.  The Highlander team is learning to play a fundamental style of basketball.  This, along with unselfish teamwork will be their trademark.  With a “Compete at Everything” attitude, the Highlanders will be looking forward to the challenge. Royal will continue to be a team that looks to take advantage of having some of the best shooters in the county, by continuing to shoot the 3.   This years squad will play a much higher tempo offense, looking to always in all ways put pressure on the opposing team.  Coach Griffin will promise only one thing, these fine young student-athletes will play hard, smart and compete everyday.  Royal High School and the community will be proud of their Highlanders!

Craig, a graduate of Fresno Pacific University, is teaching College and Career Readiness at Royal High School. Coach Griffin lives in Simi Valley with his 2 boys: Zach (7) and Landon (4).

Coach Griffin is looking forward to the year and again coaching alongside former Highlanders Kevin Habroun, Shana Moore and Aaron Haney.  Add a strong nucleus of returning coaches and the Highlanders will be a program to reckon with.

Kevin Habroun - Varsity Assistant

Coach Kevin Habroun is entering his third year as an assistant coach for the Varsity Boys basketball team.

In his three varsity seasons playing for the Highlanders, he was part of a Royal team that finished with the most wins in the program’s history and also made two consecutive appearances in the CIF Finals. He graduated from Royal in 2013 with the fourth highest shooting percentage in a season and sixth highest shooting percentage in a career.

After Royal, Coach Habroun graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in 2017 where he earned his B.A. in History with a minor in Spanish.  He is currently in his first year as a teacher at Royal, where he teaches both AP and CP World History.

Coach Habroun is incredibly excited to be back at Royal where he always looks forward to seeing the basketball players both on the court and in the classroom.  He intends to bring his knowledge of the Royal system and his experience playing in the CIF Finals, as well as state playoffs, to keep a winning culture thriving at Royal.

Coach Habroun currently lives in Simi Valley, where he enjoys trying new restaurants, spending time with family and friends, and being a part of the Royal family.
