Player Evaluation & Development

player evaluation method

Players are constantly evaluated using the following rubric. The performance scores range from 2-10 with 2 being the lowest score in any category. This means that the lowest overall score a player can get is an 8 out of a possible 40 points.

In high school, players can add a 5th category: "G.P.A." so that the overall amount of points awarded can reach a maximum of 50.

Players are expected to improve their overall rating as the season progresses and as they advance in their soccer development.

For example, I would give a player like Internatzionale of Milan's Javier Zanetti a score of 40. He represented Inter's golden era as team captain from 1995 to 2014. He played in 615 games in Italy's Serie A. He is a phenomenal physical specimen, he's incredibly smart on and off the field, and he's a fantastic person with an impeccable work ethic. He is adored by the fans and his peers. He currently serves as Inter's vice president. He is one of only a handful of international players who I think would score a perfect 40.

TECHNICAL........................................................................................................................

The technical aspect of the game refers to a player's technique or ball skill (dribbling, ability to create space between him and the defender).

  • Passing & Receiving
  • Shooting
  • Ball control & Turning

TACTICAL.........................................................................................................................

Refers to the player's game awareness. How he "sees" the game from  a tactical viewpoint (team shape, team formation, etc.).

  • Playing out from the back
  • Possession & Transition

PHYSICAL........................................................................................................................

Refers to athletic ability and overall physical strength, not to be confused with height or size. Big, tall players don't always make good players. On the contrary, smaller players are often the best overall players. Remember that a small player like Lionel Messi, who is 5'7" tall, also has a low center of gravity and is very strong physically.

  • Speed & Agility
  • Endurance
  • Strength & Power

PSYCHOSOCIAL...............................................................................................................

This aspect of the game refers to the player's mental capabilities to internalize information. This aspect of the game deals with a player's "soccer age" vs. "biological age". This also deals with a player's development within a social group (acceptance, sense of belonging, self-esteem, etc.). A player's attitude towards the game and practice also belongs in this category as well as how he takes constructive criticism.

  • Respect & Discipline
  • Cooperation
  • Competitiveness
  • Work rate
